BIO

Weijie Hu is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, and Co-Editor of The Journal of Architecture, published by the Royal Institute of British Architects. He holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Sydney and an MSc in Architecture, Building and Planning from Eindhoven University of Technology. A registered architect in the Netherlands, he has worked professionally across China, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Hu’s research examines housing, community, and land politics, with a particular focus on China and its wider implications for Australia and Asia. His first book, Remaking Urban Life in Chongqing’s Public Rental Housing: A Family-Based Account, was published by Springer Nature in 2025. His second book, Marriageable Homes in Urban China: Housing, Debt, and Family Futures in Chongqing, is forthcoming from De Gruyter Brill in May 2027. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed Q1 journal articles, over 90% as first or corresponding author, in top journals including Cities, Dialogues in Human Geography, and Urban Geography.

At Swinburne, Hu contributes to academic leadership, governance, and curriculum development. He is a member of the Academic Senate (2025–27) and the Academic Policy and Quality Committee (2025–27), and served as Academic Director of Work-Integrated Learning (2025). His curriculum work in sustainable construction has supported professional competencies, industry-relevant learning, and the AACA reaccreditation of Swinburne’s architecture programs for 2024–27.

Before entering academia, Hu worked with internationally recognised practices including Kengo Kuma and Associates and Dominique Perrault Architecture in Paris, before establishing his own practice. His projects have received international recognition, including the ArchDaily Building of the Year Award and S.ARCH Award in 2017 and the International Rural Architecture Award in 2015. His independent housing work was also presented in a solo exhibition during Melbourne Design Week in 2023.
