Weijie Hu is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, and Co-Editor of The Journal of Architecture, published by the Royal Institute of British Architects. He holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Sydney and an MSc in Architecture, Building and Planning from Eindhoven University of Technology. A registered architect in the Netherlands, he has worked across China, the Netherlands, France, Japan, and Australia, bringing an international perspective to research, teaching, and professional practice.

Hu’s research examines housing, community, land politics, and urban development, with a particular focus on China and comparative implications for Australia and Asia. His first book, Remaking Urban Life in Chongqing’s Public Rental Housing: A Family-Based Account, was published by Springer Nature in December 2025. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed Q1 journal articles, over 90 % as first or corresponding author, in leading journals including Dialogues in Human Geography, Urban Geography, and the Journal of Urban Management. His work contributes to international debates across architecture, urban studies, housing, and human geography. Several publications have received more than 3,000 views and have been cited across disciplinary fields.

At Swinburne, Hu contributes to academic leadership, governance, and curriculum development. He is a member of the Academic Senate for 2025–27, the Academic Policy and Quality Committee for 2025–27 and served as Academic Director of Work-Integrated Learning in 2025. His redesign of ARC80004 Sustainable Construction and Documentation strengthened sustainability assessment, professional competencies, and industry-relevant learning, contributing to improved student outcomes and the successful AACA reaccreditation of Swinburne’s architecture programs for 2024–27.

Before entering academia, Hu worked with internationally recognised practices, including Kengo Kuma and Associates and Dominique Perrault Architecture in Paris, before establishing his own practice. His projects combine adaptive reuse, vernacular craftsmanship, and sustainable materials and have received international recognition, including the ArchDaily Building of the Year Award in 2017, an S.ARCH Award in 2017, and the International Rural Architecture Award in 2015. His independent work on housing was also presented in a solo exhibition during Melbourne Design Week in 2023.
