Xavier Mills is a post-doctoral research fellow on the Australian Research Council funded project, led by Dr Joe Latham, titled 'Investigating Telehealth Psychological Support: Exploring Continuity of Care in the Provision of Psychological Support via Experiences of LGBTIQA+ People'. The project addresses the significant national problem of rapidly increasing psychological support needs by examining how patients and clinicians experience connection in the context of rapidly changing contemporary technologies, with a focus on the experiences of LGBTIQA+ people.

Xavier's doctoral research investigated how queer people in Australia articulate, relate to and experience the ‘family’ by examining the governance of families in individual practices, social interactions, and institutional technologies. His research enabled critical insight into queer families by showing how the nuclear family remains a pervasive normative benchmark and political tool in Australia.

Broadly speaking, Xavier's research interests sit across sociology, families, and sexuality studies. Using interviews, qualitative analysis, and policy research, his work examines how power operates through seemingly neutral systems, and how people navigate, resist, and rework these structures in their everyday lives. In addition to work with queer families, Xavier has undertaken research focused on LGBTQ+ inclusion, everyday experiences of non-binary and trans people, young adults’ uses of digital technologies across diverse sexual and gender identities, and young people’s experiences of intimate partner violence.
