BIO

Dr. Jiayang Wu received the bachelor's degree from Xidian University in June, 2010, and the Ph.D. degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in December, 2015. After that, he joined Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) in July, 2016. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Optical Sciences Centre and an Associate Investigator for ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS). He is also a Senior University Lecturer teaching undergraduate / honours courses in physics and mathematics.

After over 10 years' accumulation, Dr. Wu has gained considerable experience and developed extensive expertise about advanced optical devices and materials. His current research fields include integrated photonics, 2D materials, nonlinear optics, and thermal photonics. As of March 1st of 2026, he has more than 110 publications in SCI journals, highlighted by Nature, Nature Reviews Chemistry, Advanced Materials, Advances in Optics and Photonics, Science Bulletin, Advanced Functional Materials, Nature Communications, Applied Physics Reviews, Light: Advanced Manufacturing, Small, Laser & Photonics Reviews, and Nano Letters. Among his SCI journal papers, 75 are published in Q1 journals, and 6 are recognized as ESI highly cited papers. He is also an inventor on 15 filed technological patents.

In 2021, Dr. Wu was named by the Australian’s Research magazine as the top researcher in the field of Optics & Photonics (only 1 person). From 2021 to 2025, He was consecutively named in the world's top 2% of scientists list (Stanford University & Elsevier citation database), and in 2025 he was recognised in both the career-long and single-year lists. He also won the SUT Early Career Researcher Award in 2021, the Early Career Researcher – Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Award in 2021, the Rising Star of Science Award in 2022, and the Springer Nature Editorial Contribution Award in 2025.

Dr. Wu is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the Optica. He is currently serving / has served as an associate editor for npj Nanophotonics (2024-2026) and PhotoniX Synergy (2026-2028), as well as a guest editor for Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics (2021, 2023), Micromachines (2021-2023), and Journal of Optics (2019). He has served as chair for the technical program committee (TPC) of Optoelectronics and Communications Conference (OECC) 2024, and the TPC member for SPIE NanoPhotonics Australasia (2017), Australian and New Zealand Conferences on Optics and Photonics (ANZCOP) 2019, Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Pacific Rim (CLEO-PR) 2020, Advanced Photonics Congress (APC) 2021 - 2023, OECC 2025, 2026, and International Conference on Optoelectronic Integration (COINT) 2025, 2026. He has also served as a referee for over 60 articles in SCI journals, mainly including Nature, Nature Photonics, Nature Electronics, Nature Physics, Nature Reviews Electronic Engineering, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Laser & Photonics Reviews, Optica, Advanced Optical Materials, ACS Photonics, Photonics Research, APL Photonics, Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, and Journal of Lightwave Technology.

Dr. Wu is currently supervising / has supervised 5 postdoctoral researchers, 20 PhD students at SUT, 8 visiting PhD students, 1 honours student, and 7 undergraduate students (for internships). His PhD students have gone on to win a number of awards, including the IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowships in 2019, 2021, and 2022 (10 recipients globally each year), the Wanda Henry Prize in 2020 (1 recipient in Australia & New Zealand each year), the SUT HDR Woman Researcher of the Year in 2021 and 2022 (2 recipients in SUT each year), and the SUT Iain Wallace award in 2020, 2021, and 2022 (for outstanding PhD research).
