Phuong received his professional architectural degree from Hanoi Architectural University (B. Arch 2000). He also practiced as an architect in Hanoi before continued his graduate education at Melbourne University Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning with a Masters (2004) then a Ph.D (2009) both in Architecture and Planning. Phuong also worked as a guest lecturer and tutor in both history/theory subjects and design studios while studying at the University of Melbourne. Dr Dinh's research has been published as journal articles in The Journal of Interior Design (Wiley, 2010); Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticisms (Wiley, 2011) and as a book chapter in the edited book The Aesthetics of Architecture: Philosophical Investigations into the Art of Building (Blackwell, 2011). Phuong's research interests include sense of place, the influences of local culture on architecture and interior design, and vernacular design and changes. His recent academic publications include articles and book chapters in IASTE Working Paper Series: Traditional Dwellings and Settlements (UC Berkeley, 2014, 2016, 2018), History of Science, Technology in Non-Western Cultures (3rd Edition, Springer, 2015). He is also a co-editor and co-author of the book Unbounded: On Interior and Interiority (CSP: UK, 2015).

Since 2014, Phuong has led nine design study tours/travelling studios for Swinburne’s design students to Vietnam with five of them supported by Asia-bound and the New Colombo Plan funds from the Australian Government. 

Dr. Phuong has more than 25 years of teaching experiences in architecture and interior architecture across different areas including design studios, construction, architectural theory and history at Melbourne University and Swinburne University of Technology.  At Swinburne, Dr. Phuong teaches interior architectural studios across different year levels. For the last 7 years, He has convened and taught into the Honours year’s Capstone Studios for Interior Architecture with a particular focus on adaptive reused spaces, building retrofit and human experiences in spaces. Dr. Phuong has also supervised a number of PhD students to completion as both principal supervisor (5) and co-supervisor (1).
